Eldad the Danite emerged in the 9th century with tales of an independent Jewish kingdom possibly surviving beyond the historical memory of the Jewish exile. His narratives of a Jewish kingdom composed of exiled tribes intrigued the Jewish communities in North Africa, who were both curious about the plausibility of such a society and captivated by the implications for Jewish identity and continuity. Although scholarly evaluations cast doubt on some of his claims, his tales continue to inspire discussions about Jewish diasporas and identity.
