History
Oswald Rufeisen, born a Jew in Poland, played a pivotal role near World War II end by saving Jewish lives while undercover in the Nazi ranks. He later sought refuge in a convent, converting to Christianity and becoming Brother Daniel. Despite his conversion, Rufeisen's deep connection to Judaism and his Zionist dream led him to pursue Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return. However, his case reached the Israeli Supreme Court, challenging the interpretation of Jewish identity and the principles of the Law of Return, ultimately resulting in a legal and cultural debate on who is entitled to be recognized as Jewish in Israel.
