JL;DR SUMMARY Israeli writer Etgar Keret and U.S. broadcaster Ira Glass navigate their friendship and evolving perspectives in the wake of October 7, addressing the stark differences and eventual convergences in their views on the current Israeli crisis. A way out west there was a fella, fella I want to tell you about, fella by the name of Jeff Lebowski.

  • At least, that was the handle his lovin' parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself.
  • This Lebowski, he called himself the Dude.
  • Now, Dude, that's a name no one would self-apply where I come from.
  • But then, there was a lot about the Dude that didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
  • And a lot about where he lived, likewise. But then again, maybe that's why I found the place s'durned innarestin'.

"And the concern is not just at the level of, you know, politics and, and, and policymakers. You speak to regular Israelis. They are checking their safe room. They are checking. They've got supplies. They think they could be, you know, holed up for a whole period while the country's on under bombardment. Just to emphasize what a huge escalation this would be when October 7th happened and Joe Biden flew straight away to Israel, to stand at Israel's side. He, and when he delivered that one word message to Israel's enemies don't, what he feared and what was in people's minds was the kind of proxy attack you referred to of Hezbollah, joining in, using its very, very heavy arsenal. The foreign reports you're describing say that very deliberately the decision has been taken to go to skip out that stage, which is a huge deal in itself and escalate up a notch to the one thing, which I think it's fair to say, most people almost thought would never happen, which is a direct attack from Iranian soil onto Israeli soil. The war reports to say that, the Supreme leader has made that decision almost as if it's, you know, Iran's honor is at stake and therefore it must come directly via rather than via an intermediary as it were. I mean, this obviously would be the most colossal escalation were it to happen. And I think, you know, the sign so far is that Joe Biden is, is, is reinforcing the message he gave back in October and saying that, the support that Washington gives to Israel is ironclad. Significance of that is this comes just days after he was on the phone to the prime minister, Netanyahu, essentially saying our support is conditional on you behaving the way we want you to behave in your war with Hamas."
